I get to see it in local carnivals which house underpaid performers most of whom have been doing what they do since they were kids with no choice in the matter. Just make sure that in addition to explaining your intellectual interest in the study of inequality that you also include your experience and feasible solutions. It sounds like you enjoy people watching and I certainly do too! And colleges are most interested in who you are! You are correct, this is much less personal! I would save this topic for exploring in a college paper rather than your admission essay. Also, depending on the school and reader, this could be a subject matter in which people hold their own opinions that could differ from your own.
